Professional Standards for BC Educators

I think of the Professional Standards as part of the constitution for all educators in BC. It provides professional standards for teachers to always follow to provide the best interests of students always. For example, Article 1 “Educators value the success of all students. Educators care for students and act in their best interests” means our number one priority on our classrooms is to ensure students are doing their best to ensure success for all their students. It also signifies that we are responsible for these students everyday for the whole school year as their parents entrust us to ensure their learning is being conducted in an appropriate and amusing manner. They are all guidelines that we as teachers must adhere to and it is important to read often to ensure we are up to date. Im summary they are one of many documents and regulations that act as what I call a Constitution for Teachers.

EDPR 3100 Reflections

When someone begins teaching, it is both an exciting and nervous ordeal. I began my Practicum in October 2019 at Merritt Bench Elementary school in a Grade 4 classroom. I was excited as Grade 4 is the perfect class to teach for a first time in practicum. When I taught my first lesson, I was excited as I was getting my feet wet when teaching. Despite only teaching four Language Arts lessons, I feel as if I had taught some valuable concepts to students in learning grammar and the fundamentals of novel studies such as vocabulary and writing chapter summaries. I believe my teaching was great overall as I demonstrated confidence in myself with each lesson and also when helping students when other lessons are being conducted by the teacher or my teacher candidate partner. I believe that also my lesson planning and organizational skills have come in great use and will still continue to be of great use to me.  However I admit where I need improvement is to not be worried about if students may not understand the material at first because that is where my teaching strategies will come into use where I can ensure that students who were not understanding the concepts will understand them with more instruction. Another reflection I would like to acknowledge is that it is okay to start from scratch if a lesson is not going the way I had planned as long as the new step is going to be made immediately or there is a back-up plan ahead of time. In summary I look forward to my next practicums and of course to my teaching career.
